THE HISTORY OF MAX'S PAWS FOR C.H.A.M.P.S. INC.
& RELAXED OBEDIENCE

Max’s Paws for C.H.A.M.P.S. Inc. is a Victorian-based charity founded by Margaret Flanagan of Flanagan’s Farm. After losing her beloved border collie, Max, Margaret began to realise the importance of dogs in assisting people with special needs and mental health issues through companionship and health management.

Margaret began to “sell” pups at very subsidised prices to people in need, and with the assistance of friends, Max’s Paws for C.H.A.M.P.S. Inc. was founded with the following goals:

  1. Ensure dogs at affordable prices are available for people in need or with special needs.

  2. Provide the opportunity for these persons to work with experienced dog handlers or “mentors” to train their dogs in basic obedience (*RELAXED OBEDIENCE), thereby cementing the bond between dog and owner by allowing them to develop confidence and social skills while training their companion in obedience to make ownership easier and more manageable.

  3. Compensate selected breeders as a subsidy to allow cost-neutral breeding of suitable dogs.

Any profits from Relaxed Obedience training are directed to support charities that align with Relaxed Obedience’s philosophy. In recent times, this has included the purchase of dry dog food distributed to dog owners in need by The Salvation Army. In the past, beneficiaries have included Pets of the Homeless, Dogs for Children With Disabilities, donations towards a special needs school bus, subsidised fees for clients on pensions, and help with vet bills for clients who meet certain criteria.

After Max passed away, Margaret, as a pensioner, was unable to afford a quality dog. Having worked with dogs for over 60 years after getting her first puppy at 6 years of age, Margaret suddenly realised that dogs were brilliant — if not necessary — for people in her situation. Her experience inspired her to help others and ensure all who needed a great companion dog could find one.

OUR MISSION

We work with all people helping them to raise the best possible puppy for their circumstances.

People with disabilities are welcome.

Every one deserves a good dog, and a good dog deserves a good owner.

Our aim is to prevent cruelty to dogs through the ignorance of owners.

We are a not-for-profit organisation. That means that monies raised through your enrolment (or donation) go towards great causes like:

  • Subsidising costs of good dogs for people with disabilities who qualify

  • Supporting charities like Pets of the Homeless and Dogs for Children with Disabilities

So, while you help the dynamics with your own puppy, you are also helping those less fortunate.
